Identifying (and Avoiding) Journal Articles

There will be times when you want to use research-based scholarly journal articles to support your work and to provide evidence for what you say or write.  This current event-based assignment does not require this type of research-based information.

Current events will be found in magazines, newspapers, TV, radio, and podcast programs that are updated frequently. 

 

Types of Articles and Their Characteristics

  Popular or Trade Articles Journal Articles
Audience Public or Practitioners Researchers or Experts
Authors Usually journalists Usually professors or graduate students
Images Frequent color photos Charts, Graphs, Tables of statistical information
Language Simple to read, little expertise required Technical terms, written for other experts
Length From a few paragraphs to a few paes Lengthy articles, usually several pages.
Ads Frequent advertisements Few or no advertisements
Article Structure No discernable structure Rigid structure: Abstract, Introduction, Method, Results, Conclusions, and References

Regional newspaper database-

Newspapers

Des Moines Business Record - a newspaper for and about Des Moines-based businesses.  Available in print in the BVU Library, first floor.

Des Moines Register - Daily newspaper (except Saturdays) that covers business news in Iowa.

Wall Street Journal - see Wall Street Journal Access button in the left column for set-up instructions.

New York Times - see New York Times Access button in the left collumn for set-up instructions. 

 

Business magazines

Bloomberg Businessweek - issues within the Business Source Premier database.  

Forbes - issues within the Business Source Premier database.  Also available in print in the BVU Library, current issues on first floor

Fortune - issues within the Business Source Premier database.  Also available in pirnt in the BVU Library, current issues on first floor.

Inc. - Presents articles on financial & personnel management, marketing, administration, sales and operations for executives & managers of small to mid-sized companies. Also available in print in the BVU Library, current issues on the first floor.

General news magazines (but business is often covered)

Newsweek Global - Covers national and international affairs, science, sports, religion, business, medicine & the arts.

The Nation - this monthly magazine covers politics, economics, education, foreign policy, labor, law and other social issues, literature and the arts. Also available in print in the BVU Library, current issues on the first floor. 

Time Magazine - this news magazine covers politics, news, entertainment, sports, and business articles.

In any Ebscohost database (like Business Source Premier or Academic Search Complete) you can set up your search like this to find any article in Bloomberg Businessweek about the topic of telecommuting.
