GENS140 Where Have all the Icebergs Gone?: Issues in the Environment

This guide will help students find newspaper and magazine articles on the topics covered in this course.

Opposing Viewpoints

The Opposing Viewpoints database works a little differently than our other article databases, but it is well-suited to this assignment.  Here is a search and some things to look for as you select articles.

1.  Focus on the News or Magazine categories.  Stay away from Scholarly articles category for this assignment.  In the search below, I searched for "plastic AND landfill" and then selected the NEWS category.

2. I noticed that many of my search results were coming from British or Australian newspapers.  Recalling that Professor Lawson mentioned The New York Times or The Washington Post as good sources, I clicked the "Publication Titles" button and checked those titles  to limit my search to articles from those approved newspapers.  I also added The Christian Science Monitor because it has a good reputation for balanced reporting.

3.  You have the ability to sort your search results by RELEVANCE or NEWEST.  Select the option in the pull-down menu that is most important to you.

4.  Under each article title, the article length is given.  For this class, you must select articles that are at least 1000 words in length.  Shorter articles will not be accepted.  In this example, the first article from The New York Times has more than 1000 words.  The second article listed from The Washington Post isn't long enough, so don't use it.

5.  Click on the article title to read the full-text of the article.
