You might think these are little "old school," but these print encyclopedias, located in the Library Reference section are another great place to get background on your topic idea.
International Encyclopedia of Marriage and Family. (2003). Thomson, Gale. Ref HQ 90 .E52 2003, 4 volumes
Entries are written for general readers. A broad topic is broken down into individual entries. As an example, "Divorce," has related articles such as "Effect on Children," "Effect on Couple," and "Effect on Parents." Most entries list a number of references for further research.
Coleman M.J. & Ganong, L.H. (eds). (2014). The Social History of the American Family: An Encyclopedia. Sage. Ref HQ 535 .S63 2014, 4 volumes
This encyclopedia is a little more scholarly and more up-to-date than IEMF, listed above. The fourth volume of this set contains a glossary, resource guide, some (dated) Census information, and the index for the set. Articles on family issues are contained in the first three volumes.
