Library DIY

Welcome to the Library DIY, created to help you walk through some of the most commonly asked research and library questions!

Checkout or renew library materials

Checking out items

When you want to check out materials, simply bring the item(s) you would like to check out to the main floor Circulation Desk. You will need your current BVU ID to check out items. For more details on loan periods, refer to the Circulation Policy chart

Renewing items

Most items borrowed from the library are eligible for renewal if:

  • Items are not already overdue

  • Items are regular circulating materials

  • Items are not on recall or hold for someone else

You can renew items in several ways:
In person: Stop at the Circulation or Ask Me desk
By phone: 712.749.2098
By e-mail: library@bvu.edu
Online: Self-renew items using the Library Catalog

Most library materials can be renewed online. To see a list of materials you currently have checked out, due dates, and items on hold, go to the Catalog. Then click "Sign In" at the upper right.  Once logged in, click on  "My Account" and an then click on "Checkouts" to get a list of items you have checkout out.  Click on the title(s) to renew. For each item you would like to renew, click on the box to the left of the information, and then click the “Renew” button. This will generate a new due date based on the format of the material and your patron profile.

Reserve materials

Item on Reserve must be renewed in person at the Circulation Desk.

To renew ILL items

You can request a renewal for your ILL item provided it is not marked "No Renewals." Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Please have the ILL number of the item you wish to renew, and stop by, call, or email as directed above. You will receive an e-mail within a few days notifying you that your renewal was granted or denied. If a renewal was granted, the e-mail will include your new due date. If it was denied, you must return the book by the original due date.

We Value Your Privacy

Please note that the library does not keep track of items that you previously checked out once you return them. We only have a record of where our books currently are; we do not keep historical records. You need to keep your own records if you later want to reference a book that you have checked out and returned.
