Using AI such as ChatGPT may be used to create text and to facilitate research, but not to write the full text of a paper or other research project.
Instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT and other AI. As always, check with your instructor before utilizing AI for your academic projects.
The official APA Style Blog uses an adapted version of the reference template for software to cite AI. Because these guidelines are based on the software template, they can be adapted to note the use of other large language models (e.g., Bard), algorithms, and similar software.
Common software and mobile apps mentioned in the text, but not paraphrased or quoted, do not need citations, nor do programming languages. "Common" is relative to your field and audience.
Include reference list entries and in-text citations if you have paraphrased or quoted from any software or app, or if you are mentioning software, apps, and apparatuses or equipment with limited distribution.
